Understanding Review Text

Review Text is a type of text in English that aims to review or assess a work, whether film, book and so on. This assessment aims to find out and inform the quality, advantages, and disadvantages possessed by the work. The communicative purpose of the text review is to criticise an art work, events for a public audience (to criticize events or works of art or others for the general public). 

General Structure of  Review Text

You must have known that in each type of text in the English language has a different structure. The structure adapts to the purpose and function of each type of text. So that the structure in the review text and descriptive or narrative text will certainly be different. In the text review, there are four sentence structures, namely:

1.Introduction

In this section, you should write a preview or overview of a work or object that you will review or value in the  review text. Overview is specific information about the work or object, such as the name of the work or object, the usefulness of the work or object, and so on.

2.Evaluation

In this section you can go deeper and deeper. As the name implies, this section is the part where you can give an evaluation. In this section, you can give a more detailed picture of a work or object that you will value or review.  The things you can write in this section are in the form of parts, uniqueness or quality. But that relates to facts without including your personal opinion.

What must be noted is, make sure that you avoid to write too many descriptions of the work or object so as not to seem to 'teach' the reader who reads your  review text. The term commonly used in this structure is about the 'good' or 'not' of the work or object you wrote.

3.Interpretation

After writing enough evaluations in the previous section, in this section, it's time to write down your personal views or opinions regarding the work or objects you wrote or that you reviewed. In this  interpretation  section you can do an evaluation of a work or object from your point of view. You can also compare the work or object you are reviewing with other works or objects that are like to better support and strengthen your view of the work or objects you value.

Here you can also write down what parts of the work or object you value that are the advantages or disadvantages of the work or object. You can also give value to the work or object.

4.Summary

In the last structure, you as the author can give a conclusion on the last part of the review text.  After you provide a detailed evaluation in the evaluation section and give your view of the work or object in the interpretation section, in this section you can explain whether the work or object reviewed is valuable or not for prospective buyers, namely readers. Or whether the price offered is in accordance with the quality, or if the review is a movie or song, whether it will be worth it to watch or hear.

In addition to structure, usually each text in English has its own language characteristics or language features. No exception to this  text review. The text of this review has the following linguistic characteristics:

a.Using the present tense.

b.Using Adjectives such as bad, good, valuable, etc.

c.Using long and complex clausesd

d.Use metaphors in the review.

Example Of Review Text About The Indonesia Raya Song

Introduction

The song Indonesia Raya was written by Wage Rudolf Soepratman. Precisely on October 28, 1928. Since then, the Indonesia Raya song has been designated as the National Anthem.

Evaluation

The song Indonesia Raya is sung at every flag ceremony, every opening of state events and on any other occasions. This song aims to unite the nation. The lyrics of this song describe the struggle and the spirit of the national heroes in their struggle for independence.

Interpretation

Every time I sing the Indonesia Raya song, I always feel proud. Especially in the part of the lyrics "Indonesia Kebangsaanku. My people and my homeland. Let's Cry Out. Indonesia Bersatu", I almost cry everytime I sing that part of the song.
